Adapting to the increased demand for walkable urbanism will mean different things for different kinds of suburbs. For places that have a center or downtown, the main challenge is how to accommodate more people on a limited supply of land. For places that don’t have a center, the question may be how to create one. And creating a center will involve different approaches, depending on whether the municipality has to build the center from the ground up or must retrofit existing development. Municipal leaders and development professionals will discuss the challenges of making suburbs more “city-like” and give examples of solutions that have worked elsewhere.
